4. Artificial Intelligence

Smallpdf has added AI features, including a chat-with-document capability and summarization. They are well built and sit inside its Pro tier. Credit where due: Smallpdf shipped these to a large, non-technical audience cleanly.

The LittlePDF approach. AI is native here rather than bolted on. OCR runs on Google's Gemini, and the conversational and language tools, chat with PDF, summarize, and translate, run on Anthropic's Claude. The free tier includes a daily allowance of AI calls out of that 500-credit budget, so you can try them without paying. Pro removes the cap. If your workflow leans on extracting text from scans with OCR or interrogating long documents, this is the area where LittlePDF pulls ahead on both capability and price.

What Smallpdf Genuinely Does Better

An honest comparison has to concede the other side, so here it is without hedging.

Smallpdf's interface is more refined and more consistent than almost anything in the category, ours included on a couple of tools. Its desktop and mobile apps are mature, where LittlePDF is web-first. Its team and e-signature workflows are more developed for organizations that need shared accounts and audit trails. And it has years of reliability behind it at scale, which counts for something when a document absolutely has to convert correctly the first time.
